KodlContemporary holds a special, unmistakable place within the Czech art scene. It follows the footsteps of the long-lasting gallery, collecting, and patronage tradition of Kodl Gallery, which dates back to the previous century and specializes in an exquisite (high standard) presentation of contemporary Czech art in an international context. Gallery’s main goal is to establish a strong reputation of contemporary Czech art in the world and to support international relationships of the younger generation of Czech artists through diverse exhibitions, events, and pop-ups both domestically and globally.

The KodlContemporary project was founded in 2017 by members of the youngest generation of the Kodl family, with the aim of showcasing the best of contemporary Czech art to the current art collector community. This intention gave birth to the eminent exhibition of contemporary art known as the Summer Art Salon, which annually presents the works of selected Czech artists at the Kodl Gallery in the very centre of Prague, across from the National Theatre.

Over the past few years, the Salon has established its unique position within the domestic art scene and has also focused on helping its artists conquer the borders of the Czech Republic. For this reason, one of the founders of KodlContemporary, Jakub Kodl, decided to take a significant step. In 2022 the project evolved into an independent gallery of contemporary art with clear goals and visions – to amplify the impact of Czech contemporary art on a worldwide level, achieved through international exhibitions, intermedia events, and collaborative endeavors with contemporary Czech artists.

"Kodl Contemporary is not just a gallery; it's a dynamic platform that connects Czech artists with a global audience, and the Czech collector community as well as the general public with the most current aspects of contemporary art."

Jakub Kodl, co-founder of KodlContemporary

In 2023, Jakub Kodl organized a traveling exhibition called Summer Art Salon, which was presented not only to the Czech audience in Prague, but also to Finnish collectors in Helsinki. Apart from crossing geographical borders, KodlContemporary aims to challenge the traditional concept of art collecting. Its exhibition program includes photography, multimedia objects, glass sculptures and graphics, questioning the belief predominant in the Czech collector market, that valuable components of an art collection can only consist of paintings.

Special guests of the Summer Art Salons have included renowned photographers such as Sebastião Salgado, Antonín Kratochvíl, and Ivan Pinkava; multimedia artists like Jakub Nepraš and Louise Frydman; as well as artists whose work is intimately connected with glass as a medium, such as Rony Plesl and Lukáš Novák.

In addition to exhibition activities, KodlContemporary is involved in supporting significant exhibitions and publications by Czech authors, offering art consultancy and facilitating acquisitions of contemporary Czech art into major international collections.
