Lukáš Rittstein (1973)
The distinctive Czech sculptor is characterized mainly by biomorphic statues moving on the border between reality and abstraction. His work is influenced by numerous expeditions to discover the native tribes of New Guinea, which he has taken with photographer Barbora Šlapetová, and from which a unique literary work, Why Is Night So Black was created. In his sculptural work he combines unusual morphology. He confronts natural materials with the artificial, and this sculptural dialogue is analogous to the clash of indigenous cultures with modern Western civilization. Rittstein is one of the few Czech sculptors who have succeeded in enforcing their works in public space. His works are able to engage in a dialogue with the surrounding architecture and become a full-fledged part of it.
