Miika Nyyssönen (1965)
The work of contemporary artist Miika Nyyssönen is very diverse, ranging from painting to sculpture and installation to digital and computer-based art. He describes himself as an “atmosphere builder”. Although his works seem abstract at first glance, he affects the beholder’s personal visual experience through the basic constructions from which the visual world of a specific demographic group is built. He thus works with a landscape pattern, architectural structure, contour, or other common visual codes for a certain community of people. First, he focuses on an existing object, examines it in detail, and then through gradual simplifications creates a simplified visual code from it, which he then uses as the basic motif of his work. This exhibition presents three objects from his Color Sculptures series and three oil paintings from the recent Fachwerk Undseries, in which he deals with the visual code of half-timbered masonry typically associated with German culture. Nyyssönen’s exploration of this historic, but nowadays often imitated type of masonry began several years ago and he walked hundreds of kilometres with a sketchbook in hand to develop a visual language specific enough to become a vehicle of expression for his atmospheric simulations. In the work with colour and the construction of the composition, he consciously refers to the canonical works of the early beginnings of abstract art but at the same time, he does not deny the connection with the neo-geo conceptualism of the 1980s. Nyyssönen’s works have been exhibited many times in Finland and worldwide, for example, in Italy, Germany, and the USA and are part of many public and private collections.

Miika Nyyssönen on erittäin monipuolinen nykytaiteilija, jonka teokset kulkevat maalauksesta veistoksiin ja digitaalisiin ja tietokonepohjaisiin esityksiin. Hän kuvaa itseään tunnelman rakentajaksi. Vaikka hänen teoksensa vaikuttavat ensi vilkaisulla abstrakteilta, hän vaikuttaa katsojan henkilökohtaiseen näkökokemukseen käyttäen niitä perusrakenteita, joille tietyn ihmisryhmän visuaalinen maailma rakentuu. Näin hän työskentelee tietyn ihmisryhmän jakamien maisemien, arkkitehtuurisen tyylin, muotoilun tai muiden visuaalisten merkkien kanssa. Ensin hän keskittyy olemassa olevaan objektiin, jota hän tutkii yksityiskohtaisesti. Sitten hän luo vaiheittaisen yksinkertaistamisen kautta siitä visuaalisen koodin, jota hän käyttää oman työnsä perusaiheena. Tässä näyttelyssä on mukana kolme objektia hänen Color Sculptures -sarjastaan sekä kolme öljymaalausta hiljattaisesta Fachwerk Und -sarjasta, jossa hän käsittelee saksalaiseen kulttuuriin liittyvien ristikkorakenteisten talojen visuaalista koodia. Nyyssönen aloitti tämän historiallisen, mutta nykyään usein matkitun rakennustyylin, tutkimisen useita vuosia sitten. Hän käveli satoja kilometrejä luonnoskirjan kanssa kehittääkseen visuaalisen kielen, joka olisi tarpeeksi tarkka toimiakseen hänen tunnelmallisten simulaatioidensa ilmaisuna. Värien käytössä ja teoksen sommittelussa hän viittaa tietoisesti tunnettuihin teoksiin abstraktin taiteen alkuvaiheilta, mutta samanaikaisesti hän ei kiellä yhteyttä 1980-luvun neo-geo-konseptualismiin. Nyyssösen teokset ovat olleet esillä monissa näyttelyissä Suomessa ja ympäri maailmaa, esimerkiksi Italiassa, Saksassa ja Yhdysvalloissa, ja ne ovat osa monia julkisia ja yksityisiä kokoelmia.
