Miika Nyyssönen

Miika Nyyssönen (1965). The work of contemporary artist Mika Nyyssönen is very diverse, ranging from painting, sculpture and installation to digital and computer art. He describes himself as a ‘creator of ambiance’. Through his works, although abstract at first glance, he influences the viewer’s personal visual experience through the basic constructions from which the visual world of a specific demographic group of people is built. In this way, he works with a landscape pattern, an architectural structure or contour, or other visual codes common to a certain community of people. First, he focuses on an existing object, examines it in detail and then creates a simplified visual code from it through gradual reductions, which he then works with as the basic motif of his work. In the exhibition, he presents three objects from the Color Sculptures series and three oils from his recent Fachwerk Und series, in which he explores the visual code of half-timbered masonry, which is typically associated with German culture. Nyyssönen’s exploration of this historical, but nowadays often imitated type of masonry began several years ago, and the artist walked hundreds of kilometres with a sketchbook in his hand to develop a sufficiently specific visual language that could become a vehicle for his atmospheric simulations. In his work with colour and the construction of the composition, he consciously refers to the canonical works of the beginnings of abstract art, but at the same time he cannot conceal the connection with neo-geo conceptualism of the 1980s. Nyyssönen’s works have been exhibited many times both in Finland and around the world, including in Italy, Germany and the USA, and are part of many museums and private collections.
