Jiří Straka (1967)
I'm interested
Jiří Straka is an important contemporary Czech artist with a significantly close connection to China, which became his second home and the culture of which has influenced his entire work. As a substrate, he almost exclusively uses rice paper, which corresponds to minimalist, but vigorous and spontaneous form. The traditional methods and techniques of Chinese ink painting are originally intertwined in his artwork with elements of the Western artistic tradition. The legacy of classical realistic painting, which for hundreds of years has dealt with the issue of space and perspective, is mixed with Asian culture, emphasising simplicity and everyday life, peace, and a very fragile transience of life.
Selected exhibitions:
Storm above Studenec, Trutnov City Gallery, Trutnov, CZE, 2020
Chinese Sandwich, KODL Gallery, Prague, CZE, 2020
Flowers in the Sea of Evil, New Gallery, Prague, CZE, 2017
Building Sites of Ink, Václav Špála Gallery, Prague, CZE, 2015
The Frontline – Chinese from Czech, Times Art Museum, Beijing, CHN, 2012
