Leena Nio (1982)
Leena Nio counts among the leading contemporary artists. Her work is represented in prominent galleries and private collections worldwide, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection, and the Sara Hildén Art Museum. At this exhibition, she presents her works from the Comfort Place series, where she works with the visual, even haptic fascination of knitwear, from which she creates diverse motifs referring to the layered nature of everyday experience. She portrays the apparent insignificances that we encounter in our daily hustle and bustle but which are written into our own identity and underline the importance of empiricism in human life – hair tangled in knitwear, a newly sewn button, various abrasions, and torn, newly sewn threads on a sweatshirt. In knitwear, Nio sometimes captures a portrait of a button without further narrative, records the fragility of butterfly wings or the story of a racing cyclist. The warm but sometimes scratchy wool gives the beholder the impression of a physical experience. This way, the artist tests the boundary between the creator and the perceiver and stimulates their imagination. The meaning of the work is left up to each beholder with their individual experiences. It is as if the author allowed them to put on the sweatshirt and experience the depicted subject matter first-hand. Leena Nio’s paintings, however soft and lyrical they appear, present her deep knowledge of painting technique, giving us the often deceptive feeling of knitwear for which we could mistake the presented canvases. Before each series, the author researches the most suitable painting technique for executing the particular subject matter and then creates the artwork detail by detail. Working with layering and having an almost scientific approach to the potential of painting and testing its boundaries are the cornerstones of her work, which is very popular (not only) in Finland, both among collectors and curators of contemporary art.

Leena Nio lasketaan johtavien nykytaiteilijoiden joukkoon. Hänen töitään on esillä merkittävissä gallerioissa ja yksityisissä kokoelmissa ympäri maailmaa, kuten Nykytaiteen museo Kiasmassa, Saastamoisen säätiön taidekokoelmassa ja Sara Hildénin taidemuseossa. Tässä näyttelyssä on esillä hänen teoksensa Comfort Place -sarjasta, joissa hän hyödyntää neuletöiden visuaalisia ja jopa tuntoaistillisia ominaisuuksia. Näistä hän luo monimuotoisia teemoja, jotka viittaavat jokapäiväisen kokemuksen monitasoisuuteen. Hän tuo esiin näennäisesti merkityksettömiä, jokapäiväisiä asioita, jotka ovat kuitenkin osa omaa identiteettiämme ja jotka alleviivaavat ihmiselämän empiirisyyttä: neuleeseen takertuneet hiukset, vasta ommeltu nappi, erilaisia hankauskohtia ja vastaneulotut, repeytyneet langat collegepaidassa. Neuletöissään Nio vangitsee milloin muotokuvan napista ilman muuta tarinaa, milloin perhosen siiven haurauden tai kilpapyöräilijän tarinan. Lämmin, mutta joskus ihoa raapiva villa antaa katsojalle vaikutelman fyysisestä läsnäolosta. Näin taiteilija testaa tekijän ja katsojan välistä rajaa ja stimuloi katsojan mielikuvitusta. Työn merkitys perustuu kunkin katsojan henkilökohtaisiin kokemuksiin. On kuin taiteilija olisi antanut heidän laittaa collegepaidan päälleen ja kokea kuvatun aihemateriaalin käsinkosketeltavasti. Leena Nion maalaukset tuovat esiin, niiden pehmeydestä ja lyyrisyydestä huolimatta, hänen syvän maalaustekniikan tuntemuksensa. Ne luovat usein harhaanjohtavan vaikutelman neuleista niin, että niiden kankaita erehtyy luulemaan neuleiksi. Ennen jokaista sarjaa Nio etsii kullekin aiheelle parhaimman maalaustekniikan ja toteuttaa sitten teoksen yksityiskohta kerrallaan. Hänen töidensä kulmakiviä ovat kerroksellisuus ja lähes tieteellinen lähestymistapa maalaamisen ja sen rajojen potentiaalin tutkimiseen. Hänen teoksensa ovat erittäin suosittuja Suomessa ja sen ulkopuolella sekä keräilijöiden että nykytaiteen kuraattoreiden keskuudessa.
