Lukáš Novák (1987)
I'm interested
A native of Nový Bor, Lukáš Novák is a leading contemporary artist and designer of glass objects, vases, tableware, and lighting for Czech and foreign brands. Thanks to his perfect knowledge of the glassmaking craft, he can often create very daring art objects. His works are never merely a form without content; they range from satirical commentary on current social events to timeless themes concerning man and his own self. This particular topic is interpreted in his monumental realisation entitled Ego Child. The technologically demanding hanging object, melted using a special technique and printed with an embossing method originating from the Middle Ages, can serve as a wall lamp on which we can recognise a human face, covered with inscriptions such as “ego race”, “ultra fragile člověk”, “holy ego”, and “hot girls cold beer”. By the layering of glass, the artist achieves a depiction resembling a human face that refers to the ambiguity of the human personality made of layers of experience, social shaping, and upbringing. Together with the work Purge, also presented at this exhibition, these are his very first sculptures executed using this complex technique of molten glass. With his realisations, Lukáš Novák puts himself on the border of design and independent art. During the Prague International Design Festival 2021, he exhibited a series of wall-mounted glass objects entitled Pretty Little Mirage highly valued by collectors. He loosely followed up on this with a series of wall-mounted crystals entitled Pretty Mirage, presented at this exhibition. Each of these crystals represents a unique composition of cuts in glass and colour gradient. The final impression is supported by light, which the artist uses as a significant vehicle of expression to play with the truth of human perception. Using optical glass, he also tests the possibilities of human vision and achieves mystification or optical illusions. Lukáš Novák’s works have been presented in Paris, Milan, and Brussels and acquired for prominent public and private collections worldwide.
