Contemporary artists in the 92nd KODL Gallery auction
Contemporary art broke records. Contemporary art, sponsored by the KodlContemporary platform at the 92nd auction, enjoyed extraordinary interest, which is confirmed by both the 100% success rate and the high percentage increase in prices achieved (98%).
Contemporary art, sponsored by the KodlContemporary platform at the 92nd auction, brought a diverse range of media – from painting to drawing and experimental techniques to glass sculptures, which enjoyed extraordinary interest. One of the highlights of the auction was the thrilling duel for the sculpture Dialog by the virtuoso glassmaker Martin Janecký. This fascinating piece, created using the unique inside sculpting technique, doubled its price in a few seconds to finally reach the amount of 840,000 CZK, which made it an author's record for less than two hours. It was later surpassed by the author's other work – the Hamlet mask, which was the focus of the recent exhibition To Be or Not to Be, That Is the Question. In an incredible battle of collectors, it finally surpassed the symbolic million mark and Martin Janecký finally scored an author's record of 1,020,000 CZK.
Another star of the glass medium, Rony Plesl, impressed with his sculpture Geisha, which combines minimalist design with Japanese aesthetics. The work, created using the unique Vitrum Vivum technique, was auctioned for 468,000 CZK. Similarly, the sculpture Lenost by conceptual designer Lukáš Novák attracted attention, finding a buyer for 300,000 CZK.
Rony Plesl did not stop at glass sculptures. His angular drawing Event in Space 5, which explores the relationship between cosmic phenomena and human intimacy, surprised with a dramatic increase in price. It was eventually auctioned for 384,000 CZK, which was four times the starting price and a new author's record in this medium. The drawing was also part of a charity auction for the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo, which, thanks to Plesl, Karel Štědřý and Pasta Oner, received a total of 327,000 CZK.
The second charitable dimension was brought by the painter Adam Kašpar, whose painting Kamenice (sold for CZK 180,000), inspired by the landscape of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, brought a contribution of CZK 105,000. This act not only raises awareness of the importance of protecting Czech nature, but also strengthens the connection of contemporary art with environmental themes.
Geometric abstraction, which is one of the pillars of contemporary painting, traditionally aroused great interest. The minimalist canvas Form – Shadow 03 by Ira Svobodová reached a price of CZK 288,000, the painting Division II by Zdeněk Trse reached CZK 420,000, and the work Square of Distances II by Vladimír Véla reached CZK 180,000, creating an author's record. The painting Situation by Jan Pištěk, which explores the tension between political and social changes after the Velvet Revolution using a symbolic language inspired by meteorological signs, sold for CZK 360,000.
Figurative work once again proved its strength. Pasta Oner attracted attention with two works – his canvas Designer Collection, combining pop art elements with advertising aesthetics, reached a price of 312,000 CZK in a charity auction, while the painting God Saves We Spent, ironically processing the symbolism of consumerism, was sold for 348,000 CZK. Collectors were also attracted by the characteristic experimental technique of Ivana Štenclová, whose Volná sestava II sold for an author's record price of 492,000 CZK. Martin Krajc's painting Waiting for the Beginning reached an author's record price of 456,000 CZK. The work, which is undeniable in its expressive colors and melancholic subtext, captures intimate borderline moments of human existence.
Representatives of the established generation of contemporary artists, such as Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Michael Rittstein and Jaroslav Róna, aroused extraordinary interest with their distinctive works. Jiří Georg Dokoupil attracted attention with his iconic soap bubble motif (achieved price: CZK 840,000). Jaroslav Róna appealed with both the painting Cathedral in the Mountains (achieved price: CZK 372,000), which with its strong lines and deep symbolism thematizes the loss of values in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and the sculpture Knight with a Dragon (achieved price: CZK 528,000), which explores the archetypes of human existence through a mythical theme, futuristic forms and an ironic perspective.
Michael Rittstein shone at the auction with three works that brought a wide range of his artistic approaches. The Bath from 1979, representing his early work with a typically expressive charge, reached the amount of CZK 780,000, while the grotesquely tuned work Angel on a Cow reached the same price. However, the painting Waiting Room for the Past (and Homidi) attracted the most attention, which, with its raw absurdity and grotesque stylization, reached a record 900,000 CZK.
The 92nd auction of Galerie Kodl clearly showed that collecting contemporary art in the Czech Republic is undergoing a fundamental transformation. High prices, author records and an increasing interest in non-traditional media confirm the fact that collectors are looking not only for traditional media, but also for works that reflect current themes and new artistic approaches.
