Contemporary artists in the 92nd KODL Gallery auction
Contemporary art at the 92nd KODL Gallery auction offers a rich selection of current and timeless social and art-historical topics as well as visual media, from paintings and objects to experimental techniques and glass sculptures. These are more than abundantly represented at the auction, which reflects the growing collector's interest in glass, which has a long and significant tradition in Czech art history.
The world-renowned glass sculptor Martin Janecký will present the work Hamlet, created using the unique technique of inside sculpting, during which he shapes the glass from the inside. This extremely demanding method requires not only skill but also a deep understanding of human anatomy. The sculpture Hamlet was a key piece of the exhibition To Be or Not To Be, That is a Question, which took place as part of the Prague Art Week 2024 festival and where the author's works were presented alongside the work of Rony Plesl. The contrast between the living face and the skull embodies the philosophical tension between life and death, referring not only to Shakespeare's iconic play, but also to the timeless question of human mortality, a central theme of art since its inception.
The work of Rony Plesl is also represented at the auction by a work from the prestigious exhibition To Be or Not To Be, That is the Question. The elegant and minimalist glass sculpture Geisha draws inspiration from Plesl's long-standing interest in Japanese culture, which he had the opportunity to study in depth during his stay in Kyoto, where he traveled as a visiting professor. The theme of geisha transforms into a metaphorical plane, where the elements of intimacy, pride and intelligence intertwine. The piece depicts the iconic geisha hairstyle as a symbol of sophistication and tradition. In combination with details evoking parts of the female body, a deep dialogue between the physical and the spiritual arises, which gives the work a deep spiritual dimension. The sculpture is created using the Vitrum Vivum method, the perfect mastery of which has earned the author recognition on the international scene.
Lukáš Novák will present himself in the auction with the sculpture Laziness, inspired by the baroque allegories of virtues and vices by Matyáš Bernard Braun. The work satirically reflects the change in perception and the flattening of moral values in today's performance- and growth-oriented society. Laziness is thus presented not only as an aesthetic but also as a philosophical commentary on contemporary culture. This year, together with the other six cardinal sins from the series called Vices, the work was presented at the international Designblok preview in the Riding Hall of the Prague Castle, and it is a unique author's casting.
Other important objects include the bronze sculpture Knight with a Dragon by Jaroslav Róna, which combines realistic and surreal elements with mythological themes. Róna has been working with archetypal themes for a long time, and in this sculpture she develops the symbolism of the fight between the knight and the dragon as an eternal battle between good and evil. Ivana Štenclová will contribute the work Floor Exercise II, where she combines various techniques and materials, including burning motifs into plywood.
The painters will offer a diverse range of styles and themes. Martin Krajc will present the painting Friends, which is a suggestive connection of film aesthetics and elements of street art, which can be seen mainly in the eloquent and gestural drawing of an expressive character. In his work Designer Collection, Pasta Oner reflects on the transformation of the perception of female beauty in the digital world in his characteristic and pop-art-based visual language, thus artfully commenting on the commercialization of the female body.
Geometric abstraction forms a key part of the auction, with distinctive works by artists such as Ira Svobodová, Zdeněk Trs, Vladimír Véla and Karel Štědrý. In her minimalist composition Form – Shadow 03, Ira Svobodová investigates the effect of light reflection from a colored to a monochrome environment. Through the painting Division II, Zdeněk Trs examines polarity not only as a physical and geometric phenomenon, but also as a symbolic and universal problem that connects the spiritual sphere with the knowledge of ancient civilizations and the present. In the painting The Square of the Distances II, Vladimír Véla focuses on the contrast between the determinability of the square and the indefinite nature of the color spot, which symbolizes the process of creation and disappearance. In his work Deep House n. 7,2, Karel Štědrý deconstructs geometric forms inspired by the deep house musical style.
The auction also has a strong charitable dimension. Adam Kašpar donates 70% of the proceeds of his painting Kamenice to support the Czech Switzerland National Park. Rony Plesl, Pasta Oner and Karel Štědrý will support the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Karel Boromejský with part of the proceeds.
